Stubbins and Energy
Stubbins Marketing is fully committed to using
energy in the most environmentally
efficient manner. This is for the benefit of
both our existing customers and future
generations.
Stubbins was an early adopter of Combined Heat
and Power (CHP), and now has an installed
capacity of 6 megawatts per hour of electricity
generated.
We export any surplus electricity generated to the
local grid for resale to local schools,
communities and businesses. Energy generated
locally is very efficient due to the fact that
it does not suffer the 70% loss factor suffered
by power transmitted over large distances. This
means less fossil fuel is used in its
generation.
The heat generated by power stations is normally
treated as a waste product, to be discharged via
cooling towers. However at our nursery sites;
this waste heat is used to heat our greenhouses,
significantly reducing the amount of energy used
in heating these glass structures.
Finally, the exhaust from generation normally
vents to the atmosphere. However in Stubbins
case, the exhaust is cleaned in Catalytic
Converters and then pumped in to the
greenhouses. The plants absorb the Carbon
dioxide to grow, reducing the Carbon Dioxide
emitted into the atmosphere.
The combined benefits of lower power
transmission losses, use of waste heat and
carbon dioxide recycling, make CHP units the
most efficient way to generate power from fossil
fuels, reducing the carbon footprint of UK grown
produce.
Future projects include the production of Bio
Gas from organic waste produced in the
nurseries. This is Carbon Neutral when burned
and is hence the most environmentally friendly
source of fuel.
We also
use energy efficient heat
exchange units to provide heat to the main packhouse from cold store emissions.
Stubbins And Hydroponic Growing Systems
Stubbins was one of the first growers in the Lea Valley
to grow using Rockwool blocks instead of growing
in the soil. This innovation allowed us to both
improve both crop quality and crop volumes
grown. All of our nurseries now use this growing
system.
We also have a policy of recycling waste water,
with the aim of eliminating the discharge of
nitrates in to the natural environment.
Stubbins And Pest Control
Stubbins have developed natural biological
techniques to eliminate pests in our
glasshouse's.
Packaging
We have been adopting the use of returnable
crates for our customers, reducing the amount of
cardboard boxes that end up in land fill sites.
Surplus cardboard is
removed from the site for re-cycling in line with
industry guidelines and
general waste is disposed of using compactors.
Local Sourcing
Stubbins is working closely with Supermarkets to
enable product to be delivered from its
nurseries directly into depots. This reduces
the "food miles" travelled, ensuring a fresh
product and reduces the environmental impact of
the transportation.
